Aliens. Crop circles. The new world order. GMOs. Free energy. The global domination agenda.

There are many so called ”conspiracy theories” out there. But if you’re concerned about the way this world is heading, I’d be interested to hear what you have to say about the movie Thrive. The Thrive Movement began with Foster Gamble, heir to the Proctor and Gamble throne. Instead of taking the corporate route, Gamble made it his life’s mission to uncover why humanity is failing at taking care of this planet and each other. He wanted to know why we were so obsessed with growth, even if it only meant a higher quality of living for so few, while so many suffered, starved, and slayed and were slain.

He wanted to know why a people so capable of beauty and inginuity seemed to continue to sabotage themselves by stifling new technology and forms of healing. It seemed counterintuitive. What emerged after years of questioning and study was the Thrive movie, which you can view for free online.

Now, I’m not saying that you should take everything in the film verbatim. I’d always suggest that you do as much independent research as possible after seeing a controversial film. But it poses some interesting questions and draws some compelling conclusions.

I checked the internet to see what people who didn’t agree with the film had to say about it, and I must admit that their information wasn’t cited. Most of the rebuttals were based on hear-say, and tried to divert from the main issues by arguing semantics.

But there is a lot of real world evidence that much of what Gamble argues is true. Check out the story of Nikola Tesla and you can easily draw the conclusion that there are monolithic forces at work to fight the existence of free energy for everyone. If his technology would have been adapted, software engineer training would be wholly different today.

At any rate, the film is thought provoking, to say the least. You can watch it for free here.

What do you think about the Thrive movement?

I’m so glad this movie came out in 3D. Otherwise, I may have never seen this AMAZING tattoo.

Love it, or hate it Titanic is arguably the most popular film of our time. And now she’s back! 100 years after the actual ship sunk into the cold, dark sea, James Cameron is reviving the film in 3D. While we worry about the post production 3D work being shoddy, Cameron himself watched over the process, so that might make things a little better.

Honestly, we’re not sure that the new 3D version would be considered a must see or not. As a matter of fact, we’re positive that it’s not a must see movie. The reason we know that it won’t qualify is because we’re most definitely not going to hit the movie theaters this week and check it out.

There are a few reasons why we’re going to skip it:

Three and a half hours of post production 3D sounds like a motion sickness nightmare.

Three and a half hours in a movie theater during springtime sounds like a waste of good weather nightmare.

Three and a half hours of a movie we saw a billion times in the 90′s sounds like a time loss nightmare

I grew up in a small town and back in 1997 when the film was released, and back then, there was only one screen in the movie theater in town (there are two now… that’s progress). Titanic played for months and it was the only movie you could see if you were going to the movies on a Saturday night. There’s something about that memory that makes me feel like I could never see this movie again and be okay with it.

However, I also remember the first night it was released, and the entire theater was packed. It seemed like everyone in town came to see it. People brought in lawn chairs, shared seats and some even stood in the back just so they could catch this instant classic. And that’s why it qualifies as a must see movie. I’m sure if you’re a human, and if you were alive in the 90′s you’ve probably already caught this must see. If not, here’s your chance. Go check it out in theaters this week.

Do you think Titanic qualifies as a must see movie?

Here are a few can’t miss RDJ movies.

Tropic Thunder (2008)

Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus a method actor who wins every award possible. In this movie about making a movie, Lazarus plays a black character, even though the actor Jr. is portraying is white. With a cast of traditionally comedic actors, Jr. gives the standout performance to a hilarious movie.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Playing the title role in this fast paced action packed re-imagining of a classic character, Jr. delivers all the wit and quirk we’ve come to expect from the good detective. Alongside Jude Law, you’re sure to enjoy the acting even if the story leaves a bit to be desired.

A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints (2008)

Jr. plays the dual role of ditto with Shia Lebouf, and his contributions to this heart wrenching coming of age is nothing short of lovely. Everyone in this all star cast is great, but Jr. is the icing on the cake, and should be seen by everyone.

A Scanner Darkly (2008)

This adaptation of the novel of the same name is a post-apocolptic look at the world in our near future. In this mind bending tale of drug abuse and what’s right and wrong, Jr. brings his consistancy to a performance you shouldn’t miss.

These are just a few of the 74 movies Robert Downy Jr. has been in over the decades he’s been acting, in which time he has become one of the top billed actors of our time, proving time and time again his versatility and longevity as an actor, showing no signs of slowing down or stopping. You shouldn’t stop with just these movies and see everything he’s done. Duh, everyone loves RDJ.

No, we didn’t get the Julianne Moore to come on this little blog to tell us what her favorite movies are. We’re just going to guess.

Fight Club (Because she’s kind of a bad a**)

Good Will Hunting (Because she’s from Boston… right? Or was that just a 30 Rock thing?)

The Wizard of Oz (Because, because, because, because, becaaaause, because of the wonderful things she does.)

Okay, that’s really not what this post is about at all. I have no idea what Julianne Moore would consider a must see movie. But I do know that there are a few of hers that shouldn’t be missed. Here are the ones that you should definitely see if they’ve passed you by somehow:

Children of Men

In a post-apocalyptic world set in 2027, Children of Men explores what humanity means when humans have lost the ability to procreate. Moore plays an activist who, with the help of Clive Owen, attempts to transport a mysteriously pregnant woman to safety.

Not only is Moore’s performance energetic and subtle for an apocalypse film, the entire production is realistic and enthralling. Not to be missed.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

If you didn’t see this movie in the 90′s and/or as a child, this movie might not have the same impact on you. Nevertheless, it gets the Must See Movies stamp of approval. Sure, it’s the sequel, but it’s still Jurassic Park. It could have been awful, but Julianne Moore and Jeff Goldblum make this movie totally enjoyable.

The Big Lebowski

Moore rocks a mod and artsy bob when she plays the “big” Lebowski’s pretentious daughter, Maude Lebowski. If you’ve never seen The Big Lebowski, you’ve probably been hiding under a rock somewhere or you were frozen in the early 90′s. At any rate, you better start trying to catch up. The Big Lebowski is a good place to start. Then we can move on to talk about how America has a black president and we have online schools these days.

30 Rock

Even though this is a movie blog, I can’t help but mention her stint on 30 Rock as a hockey mom with a thick Boston accent. It’s fantastic.

What’s your favorite Julianne Moore flick?

What can you say about Brad Pitt that hasn’t already been said? He was the first man to ever be named Sexiest man alive by People magazine. They literally created a list just for him to be at the top of. He’s a Missouri boy with southern charm, but he’s worldly and caring (note his architecture projects in New Orleans). He’s goofy (he joined the crew of Jackass and pulled a hoax while dressed as an gorilla). Seriously, he can do no wrong. He’s the proud dad of a kajillion kids. He ages like a fine wine. And he’s made hella amazing movies.

Sure, they’re not all Must Sees. Even Pitt’s grandpa doesn’t love them all:

You know, I telephoned my grandparents the other day, and my grandfather said to me, “We saw your movie.” “Which one?” I said, and he shouted, “Betty, what was the name of that movie I didn’t like?” I thought that was just classic. I mean, if that doesn’t keep your feet on the ground, what would? -Brad Pitt

Even though there are a few bombs on the list, it’s still going to be pretty hard to narrow it down to just five movies that you have to watch. We’ll narrow it down to the top five in no particular order. If you haven’t seen the movies on this list, you should get on it ASAP. Pitt’s filmography is a mix of instant classics amazing thrillers that you can’t miss out on. So, without further ado, here are the top 5 Brad Pitt movies that you shouldn’t miss:

1. Burn After Reading (2008)

2. Fight Club (1999)

3. Interview With The Vampire (1994)

4. Se7en (1995)

5. Snatch (2000)

But wait. There’s more. Pitt just filmed three movies that we won’t be missing as soon as they hit theaters. World War Z is a post apocalyptic zombie tale based off of the Max Brooks book of the same name. Twelve Years as a Slave is a period piece about a man who is kidnapped in New York and sold into slavery. Cogan’s Trade has something to do with the mob. Who cares what it’s about? All you have to know is this simple equation: Brad Pit + kinda crazy + angry + guns = Must See Movie.

What are your favorite Brad Pitt Movies?

I’ll have to admit before I start talking about Source Code that it’s going to be incredibly difficult to stay objective in my review. I’m biased. I’m a Jake Gyllenhaal fan and no matter what he does. From Bubble Boy to Brokeback Mountain, I love it all. As a matter of fact, I can’t get enough of the Gyllenhaal. I just think he’s the bees knees. He’s always just there, acting well with his big doughy eyes and his charming smile and his fantastic biceps. The first time I saw him was when he was trying to win aviation scholarships, for himself and his friends, by making rockets in October Sky. From then I was hooked.

Funny story time: October Sky came on when I was on spring break vacation with my family last year. My mom and I were stationed on the couch drooling over a 16 year old Jake Gyllenhaal, which is totally okay now that he’s a grown man, right? Uh, well, now that the creepy part of that story is over…

The next time he was on the screen, my mom blurted out in a wine-fueled loud mumble, “I really like him, but I’m kind of angry with him.”

“Why would you ever have a reason to be angry with Jake Gyllenhaal?” I asked.

“Because he never emailed me back.”

“Why did you email Jake Gyllenhaal?”

“Because I read in an interview he did once. And it said that he had shin splints and that he had to quit running for awhile. I have shin splints and I wanted to know how he got rid of his so he could start running again.”

“So you emailed a Hollywood heartthrob for medical advice?”

“Yeah. And he never emailed me back.”

Even after explaining to her that Jake Gyllenhaal was a busy man, she still thought it was kind of rude for him to ignore her.

But in my eyes the man can do no wrong. With that said, source code was good. I think he can carry a movie even if it’s not the best film ever created. I think that was the case here. The writing was decent, the story was just okay. But Gyllenhaal? That man deserves an Oscar.

I really think they should have an Academy Award for the guy who carries a crummy movie all by himself and makes it watchable. Honestly, if anyone else would have taken the role, this movie would probably suck. The more I think about it, the more I don’t think I liked anything about it except for the performances. The storyline hooked at first, but didn’t really follow through and began to drag on towards the middle. That said, it could have been fleshed out in some places to give the character development a boost.

Overall: Yay too Gyllenhaaland supporting cast! Boo to the rest of it! Wait a second… I think this may be the dawn of a new rating system. I’d give Source Code a solid YayBoo. Watchable, but nothing to rave about.

What did you think about Source Code?

Have you ever lived in a red state? Have you ever been a bible belt dweller? If so, you can probably relate to the beginning of this film. The story seems to chronicle the life of a boy in small town, South Carolina. For the first half of an hour, this could very well be a coming of age tale that comments on sexuality in the south. It could very well be. But it’s not.

At the onset of the bloody violence that ensues, you could easily try to dismiss Red State as ordinary, gore porn. You might be hard pressed to build a case for that argument as the story moves forward. Everything about Red State is extra-ordinary, from the story, to the impeccable performances by vets and noobs alike.

Why it Wasn’t in Theaters

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this film, which never made a full release in theaters. Writer and director, Kevin Smith used this film to show his exasperation with so many things it might be hard to keep track. He’s tired of the film industry, the critics, and the hoops that, when jumped through, limit the creative process. That is apparent in the way he released the film, bypassing all of the traditional film channels and going straight to the interwebs.

Sex vs. Religion vs. Politics

The film shows Smith’s disenchantment with the ever present societal argument. By using this noisy, blood splattered genre, he makes a commentary on the way reason is usually drowned out when the fight rages on. John Goodman’s character is largely the voice of reason. But even he, gets subdued and pushed into a corner by bureaucratic structure and ideological warfare.

Winning Monologue

“My grandma on my mother’s side she had these two dogs, both bloodhounds, both came up the same litter, she kept them, gave the rest away to the neighbors. Both known each other since they had shit in their eyes, neither one ever treated any better than the other one—gentlest dogs you’d ever meet. So anyway, Thanksgiving of my ninth year these two old dogs are trailing me around ‘cause they know the score: I’m an animal lover who never finishes his supper. So right before I get up from the table I toss the two old timers a turkey leg attached to a bit of cartilage… and it was like they never met. They went at each other so ferociously all tooth and claw and jugular… they forgot anything they ever had in common, and scrapped like that discard decided between their standing and dying…. People just do the strangest things when they believe they’re entitled… but they do even stranger things when they just plain believe.”

-John Goodman as Agent Keenen

Did you see Red State? What did you think?

Howdy there movie buffs!

Today we’re starting a new series on Must See Movies. You know when you’re sitting in the movie theater and the trailers come on? You know how you get to whisper, “Ooooh. That looks good! I wanna see that!” and “God, I hate Keira Knightly’s crazy ribcage of doom.”

And you know how you can feel the person behind you staring at you thinking, “God. I wish that chick would stop whispering about these future films. She doesn’t know what the eff she’s talking about. Kiera Knightly’s rib cage should probably have the right to vote, that’s how legit it is.”

And you know how you just want to turn around and smack that guy? I mean, where does he get off judging your judgments? What a lame hypothetical dude. He’s the lamest hypothetical person in the whole hypothetical movie theater.

Anywho, it’s fun to judge movies before they come out. That’s what trailers (or ‘previews’, depending on your preference) are made for.

So we’re going to take time out of our lives to post a trailer and let our judgements fly before we even see the film. Sometimes we’ll be right (Fever Pitch). Sometimes we’ll be wrong (I can’t think of any instances, but I’m sure it will happen).

Today, let’s take a look at the film Jeff, Who Lives at Home:

And JUDGE!

It looks like Jason Segal and Ed Helms are going to get all indie with Susan Sarandon. It seems like this flick is going to show some versatility for each of these normally goofy guys.

My judgement: This film is going to be quirky, well written, and heartwarming. I bet Jason Segal is going to have an epiphany that leads him to find his purpose and move out of his mother’s home. I’d put money on the fact that Ed Helms’ character learns how to live in the moment and within’ his means. He’ll find that there’s more to life than earning something commiserate with a forensic psychologist salary. This will lead to a reconciliation between him and his wife. This is going to be a lovely movie.

Alright, ‘Jeff, Who Lives at Home’, you have been judged!

What are your judgments for this flick?

Kids is a crazy movie, and apparently really scared parents everywhere as a “realistic” look into the lives of urban teenagers. Even more than that, all they do is have sex, drink, and give each other HIV. Seriously I’m glad these kids parents never considered becoming a teacher. It starts with Telly, a smooth(?) talking ladies man, who’s favorite thing to do is take girls virginity ans give them AIDS, and he’s sleeping with a girl in a giant house. Upon finishing his “bidniss“, he gets chased out by the girls father, and he continues on his way with his friend Casper. He explains how he wants to take three girls virginity in one day. Menwhile, Jenny (Chloe Sevigny) is across town in a clinic being told she’s HIV positive, and (shockingly) realizes she got it from Tully. The rest of the movie is Tully spreading AIDS like candy, and Jenny trying to find him and stop him. The movie ends with Tully’s friend date-raping Jenny while she’s passed out, and we all assume he gets AIDS. The can’t miss moments of this gem include; a legless pan-handler on the subway scooting down the isle on a skateboard singing “I have no legs” shaking a cup of change at people; when Casper is date-raping Jenny, and he is taking her pants off, and he extra-creepy whispers to her ‘Shhhhh it’s me, Casper”, while she’s floping around drunkenly in his arms, as well as a detailed account of teenage girls giving boys oral sex from none other than a teenage Rosario Dawson.

Should you see this movie? ABSOLUTELY, if you’ve never seen this movie, you will miss out on literally hundreds of conversations, being it’s a personal favorite ice breaker of the hot male hipster persuasion. So the next time a guy walks up behind you in a bar and whispers “shhhh it’s me, Casper”, don’t mace him. Or maybe mace him.

The Internet may have forced the the music industry to undergo massive changes, but a handful of companies are stepping in to brace the film industry for the coming change. It’s simple: offer top quality streaming for free or minimal cost with little advertising and the experience is much more appealing than illegal downloads. And as more and more indy film distributions companies close, it looks like the Internet is becoming more and more the source for Indy distribution. While Hulu has recently scored another huge with Disney, as well as NBC and FOX, it’s not the only site out there for film. Bookmark these sites and start finding a TON of new films daily.

If you love documentaries, head over to SnagFilms, which specializes in anything from rock legends to politics to sports. All of the films are free to watch, and you can even snag them to place elsewhere on the Web.

The Auteurs is for the film junkie who is looking for more of a cinematic community than Facebook has to offer. Follow friends to find out what they’re watching, and then download your own films, straight from the festivals. Some films are free, while others are available for a $5 download.

Like the name suggests, Babelgum specializes in cinema from around the world. So if your curiosity has gotten the better of you, head over to Babelgum and start browsing free films. The site even hosts an online film festival, complete with a full jury which gives out more than $125,000 in cash prizes.

Joost has an amazing selection of films: global, independent, documentaries, comedies and more. And if you’re frequently found browsing the Classics section for Cary Grant, Shirley Temple, or Charlie Chaplin, Joost is the site for you.

These are just a few that I have come across on the Internet, do you have any favorite movie streaming sites that I didn’t list here? Let me know!
